The story that we are reading in AP Literature is called A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines. It is about a black man named Grant who is convicted of murder. Grant is sentenced to a death penalty. His Aunt Emma is devasted to hear that Jefferson is going to die as a so called "hog." She strictly wants someone that is willing to make him into a man. She askes Grant, a black teacher, if he can do it. At first he has an internal stuggle with himself about what a "real man" is and whether he can do it or not. Eventually he makes a commiment to help out.
